Fics like What Was Never Lost

Sarah Miller was twelve years old when a soldier raised his rifle in the dark and the world was supposed to end for her. It doesn't. She falls through something she'll never understand and lands twenty years later in a settlement called Jackson, where a man with grey in his beard and scars on his hands turns around and sees the daughter he's spent two decades grieving, exactly as he lost her. He's not alone anymore, and that's the problem. There's a girl living in his house who calls him something between father and everything else, who has spent years being the reason he gets up in the morning, and who now has to watch a ghost walk in and take up space in a life she thought was finally, finally safe. Nobody asked Sarah if she wanted to be twelve forever while the world kept moving without her. Nobody asked Ellie if she wanted to share the only family she has left. And nobody's going to tell either of them how to survive what happens next.
