Tommy looks thoroughly overwhelmed, and Ellie tries not to let the dread that’s fighting to crawl up her throat overtake her. Nothing's wrong. It’s just like she said: he’s disappointed she’s not what he expected. He probably thought Marlene would give them a pretty girl, sweet and meek, with perfect blonde hair and a mouth full of straight white teeth. But Ellie will prove to him that she’s worth ten of those pretty blonde girls, she’s got determination and grit. She’s exactly what they need on their ranch. Mr. Miller rolls his eyes skyward, his brows pinched, looking almost as if he’s in pain. But then he sighs, lets out a slow, resigned breath as he looks back to her, and extends a hand away from the station. “You best come along,” he drawls softly and starts down the stairs. Ellie smiles and follows obediently. She will prove her worth to the brothers, and she’ll finally find a place where she belongs. IE: Ellie is being fostered by the Miller brothers at their ranch, but she isn't what they were expecting. This is a found family fic based on the worlds of Anne of Green Gables and The Last of Us.
