It doesn’t take long for him to notice a problem in their settling in, however: Ellie doesn’t socialize with the other kids. At all. She sticks right by him whenever she gets the chance. She looks at the kids the same way someone would look at zoo animals, but she never tries to approach. When one of them gets bold enough to actually try to talk to her, she doesn’t move from her place right at his side. The kid will try to talk for a few minutes, but it’s a rare teenager who wants to talk to another teenager right in front of an adult, and they slip away soon enough. Ellie always watches them go with something like wary interest in her eyes, but she never tries to go after them, only pressing tighter to his side. (Ellie struggles a bit with making friends when they're back in Jackson) (Joel tries and fails not to worry about it)
