The first time Ellie ever sneaks out in Jackson–the first and hopefully the only time because she already feels like she’s developing a fucking stress ulcer from the guilt before she’s even actually done it–she has about half a dozen heart attacks on her way out. She doesn’t think the house has ever made as much fucking noise as it does as she pads softly down the hallway in her socks, boots held in one hand and her backpack in the other. She cringes at every creak in the wood and glares at the floor like it’s personally sabotaging her. She grits her teeth so hard she might be damaging them as she creeps past Joel’s door, left open like always as a signal that she’s free to get him if she has a nightmare. It’s sweet, and she normally appreciates it. Right now, though, she wishes he were a bit more of a heartless bastard about her needing him. The sight of Joel in bed, fully asleep and not remotely suspecting what she’s doing, almost makes her call the whole thing quits. He’s going to be upset, she knows, about what she’s doing. She’s just hoping the pride will offset the mad. (ellie sneaks out to try and impress joel with a hunt) (naturally, it goes terribly)
