The moment his hands were free, Vance didn't fight. He shrugged his shoulders, adjusting the collar of his jacket himself before tossing it onto a nearby laundry cart. He stood there with his arms out, completely unbothered, letting the nurses circle him to check his pockets and do exactly as they needed to do to clear him for the ward. His eyes scanned the faces of the terrified patients peeking out from the doorways, drinking in their fear like oxygen. Then, his gaze flicked further down the blue linoleum floor. "Hey, Bruce," Vance called out, his voice a gravelly, confident rasp that bounced off the clean walls. "Let anyone in your room yet?" Bruce didn't move an inch. He remained leaned heavily against the doorframe of his room, his arms tightly crossed over his chest. He glared back at Vance with a cold, venomous intensity, entirely stripped of any politeness. Instead of answering, Bruce slowly raised a half-burned cigarette to his lips, took a deep, deliberate drag, and huffed the grey smoke out directly into the large space between them. He narrowed his eyes through the haze, emphasising the silent gesture to make his point perfectly clear: fuck off.
