There is no real reason that Dennis Whitaker should have to be afraid of the dark. Not really. He’s a farm boy for fuck’s sake, the countryside gets much, much darker than Pittsburgh at night, so it’s not like he shouldn’t be used to it by now. It’s not that he’s like — super afraid of the dark as a concept… it’s more… what it represents, more than anything. It’s the solitude of night, the fact that the security of day is stripped away from him, the fact that the dark brings out the worst of humanity, that’s what scares him. (Or at least, that’s what he tells himself).
