In a world where monochromatic vision is normal for one in six, life can be quite trying - how do you appreciate art without knowledge of the varied colors that go into its composition? What do you do if you wear clashing clothes that make you the laughingstock of your friends? There is hope — expensive surgery that gives Monos the chance to see in muted color, with a 50% chance of blindness. Less risky, another group called Probes can give Monos the ability to see color as soon as they lock eyes. This may sound like a fairytale, but in many cases, disappearances and mysterious deaths of Probes have been reported for years. Alexander DuBois, a Mono with a podcast investigating crimes against Probes, is content in the life he's made for himself. Despite his status as a Mono, he doesn't realize that anything is missing from life — until he bumps into a rich-looking rockstar wannabe on the way to class and is instantly annoyed. Then their eyes meet and Alexander doesn't have words for the colorful vision he sees before him. Lucas Morgenstern won't go away, and as Mono and Probe get to know each other, mysteries threaten their fragile connection as Probes are being murdered around them.
