Lucifer Morningstar is a violin prodigy from a wealthy, aristocratic musical family. Across the city, young Alastor grows up in poverty with an abusive father (who later dies) and a mother who once showed musical promise but was forced to abandon the piano. She works as a cleaner in a grand theater, and Alastor often accompanies her, exploring the empty stages and discovering the piano.
