Fics like The Blood and the Soil

Simon Evergreen was a gifted engineer whose life went to shit on the cusp of his biggest career breakthrough. Three years into his prison sentence, after a devastating accident, he finds himself unexpectedly recruited and tasked with designing a spaceship meant for interstellar travel. The Hail Mary. It was his second chance and he was determined not to waste it, even as his haunting past loomed heavy and refused to let him go. Ryland Grace was once a molecular biologist deep in the throes of academia. But after writing a controversial paper he went too far to defend, his time as a respected scholar came to an abrupt end. Five years into his teaching career, he was recruited by Eva Stratt to study the alien life-form responsible for dimming the Sun. Maybe this would be the first of many do-overs, if he was ready to face his past shortcomings. But 11.9 light-years from Earth, both men wake up with no recollection of anything. As they try to piece the puzzle of their lives back together, they rebuild the bond they once had. All while trying to come to terms with the weight of their mission and their seemingly inevitable deaths. OR the au in which I throw Simon into PHM while keeping his Eden backstory intact
