Fics like To Be With You In Paradise, What I Wouldn’t Sacrifice

“I had hoped it wouldn’t come to this.” Gerald sighed. Maria couldn’t tell if he was talking to her or himself. “I’d tried so hard to find a way to cure you without going to such extremes. Everything we’d worked towards, everything we put Shadow through…. I’m sorry, Maria. This was… supposed to be the last resort.” Maria made a questioning sound, her heart dropping in fear. Everything was getting strangely cold, and her limbs felt impossibly heavy. She wanted to just lie in her bed, surrounded by stuffed animals and medical equipment. She was so tired. *** Roughly fifty-five years ago, a GUN soldier attempted to kill Maria. She survived, but her continued survival came at a cost she never could have prepared for. How is she meant to feel when she wakes up in the future, trapped in a body she doesn’t recognize? And why does Shadow refuse to look her in the eye?
