Fics like listening for the drop of a pin

Crystal’s life has been filled with noise for as long as she can remember. That isn’t exactly saying much, given the whole amnesia thing, but in the same way she still knows how to speak English and defend herself with bitchy commentary, she knows that the constant murmuring around her isn’t anything new. There are always people around, and those people are always masses of noise and thought and feeling, saying one thing and thinking another. When Crystal first woke up in that train car, it was all she could do to draw a line between where she ended and everyone else began. Port Townsend is smaller than London, and by the time she gets there Crystal’s started to get a better handle on herself and her powers. People aren’t exactly quieter, but they are less vivid, waves of emotions rather than a whole symphony of thoughts and voices that make it hard to think. Her abilities are useful for cases, even if it’s hard to hone in on anything without touch, and she’s managed to get a pretty good handle on things. Then, she buys a magic rock from a walrus-turned-man, and when it cracks down the middle, the world goes silent.
