Fics like Crying Out "Mayday!”

Grian wakes up, clutching at his chest and his wings flailing and with a scream stuck in his throat. It never makes its way out of his mouth—there’s something blocking it. He’s not alone in the room; he can feel hands gripping his shoulders and his face, and there are voices all around him. They’re shouting something, loud and urgent, and Grian flinches back at the noise, raising his hands to his ears. He wants to beg them to be quiet, but his mouth won’t work. “He’s back, Grian’s back!” someone calls, and the pounding of footsteps echoes in his ears. A hand moves to cup his cheek, and a familiar voice is saying something, trying to soothe him, maybe. He clutches at the person’s wrist, and they rub their thumb against his skin, and he feels safe for a moment. He tries to ask what happened. He can’t. Or, Third Life was never a game. It was always meant to be a way to torture those who disobeyed the Watchers. When Grian returns from Third Life, he returns with no voice.
