It was ridiculous the care Kaneki put into his nails, but when he’d look down at his hands, they weren’t the ones Jason had tortured. Those were visibly discolored where the regrown skin met the old. Those ones had dry and flaking cuticles. Those nails were twisted and gnarly as they’d grow in more disfigured with every snap of pliers. After those two weeks of torture at Jason's hands, every part of Kaneki had changed. Reading wasn't the same, his white hair stood out in crowds, and his nails grew black after the repeated trauma. They were reminders of why he had to be strong and why he'd left Anteiku, but that didn't mean he couldn't control everything that had changed. Yet when he made a mistake when clipping his nails, the illusion of control vanished as he looked down at the trickle of blood on his fingers and the nail that wasn't perfect anymore. Or, Kaneki tries to satisfy his need for control though actually good coping mechanisms until he can't anymore.
