“Ell-” He starts, his greeting cutting off when Ellie doesn’t seem to register the movement of the door fast enough to stop trying to pound on it, the momentum sending her forward into him and knocking them both to the floor in his effort to keep her from getting hurt. “Hey, hey,” he says. “What’s going on, sweetheart? What’s happening?” Ellie’s head lolls on her neck in a way that has his heart pounding, and finally she manages to roll it enough to look at him. The sight of tear tracks down her cheeks ratchets his terror up several degrees higher, especially with how unfocused her eyes seem. “Hey,” he says, patting her cheek gently. “Talk to me, kiddo. What’s going on?” “I’m dying,” she says, voice trembling, and his heart stops completely. “I can’t make the world stay still, and I’m gonna die.” “...what?” (ficlets of under 5k from various places in the pen verse with no connection to each other)
