Ellie blinks. “You’re lying.” The sympathetic twist to Marlene’s mouth makes the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. “Ellie, I really am sorry. He asked for a car this morning and—” “Shut the fuck up,” Ellie bites out. “You’re lying. That’s a lie.” There isn’t any desperation in Ellie’s voice. No tremor or plea. Because she knows, beyond the shadow of any doubt, knows as certain as the sun rising, that Joel would never, ever fucking leave her. Ellie isn’t sure what does it, if it’s the hardness in her tone or the look on her face, but something conveys to Marlene that her lie is dead in the water. The pity on the woman’s face shifts into something else, something cold, something that makes Ellie’s blood beat like thunder in her ears. or The Fireflies decide that Joel is worth sacrificing for the cure. Ellie disagrees.
