Fics like A hobbit's journey home.

For 81 long years, Bilbo felt a perpetual emptiness. A melancholy permanently etched into his heart. He had his nephew and his friends, yet something was missing, a gap in his life left hollow. It shouldn't be. Not really. He'd known them for a mere one year. Yet in that one year they had etched themselves into his soul. Just as they dug into stone, they had dug their way into his life. His dwarves. When they died it had felt wrong, as if the world had misstepped and by mistake taken from middle earth what it sorely needed. Taken its breath, stolen its sunlight. The fire within the forge had been put out and grown as cold as the stone surrounding it. Bilbo knows it wasn't meant to be that way, knows they were meant to live. When Bilbo gets a second chance to keep that fire alive, he makes darn sure he fans the flame.
