Fics like i’ll give you my boots, i’ll feed you cake, stay with me

“The— the boots, Erwin. You need to get t-the boots. I promised them to Tjaden, but he’ll never let you have them if you don’t take them— take them now!” He tries to lean over, peel them off, oh God, oh God, where is this pain coming from? His leg… oh God his leg… a sharp hot, blaring pain, restless and cruel. His chest rising up and down, concealed by his uniform, bloody and mud-spattered. / “I think, I am going to make a cake. How’s that sound, old dog?” A cake. Paul smiles, somewhat, if only at the absurdity of it, muscle-memory to all the banter-filled times before, when they were soldiers and their heads were clear and even though they were lambs before dogs there was no dread. He can only dread, now. Paul survives. After the war, he tries to rebuild with the only man he now can. OR I admire both Erich Maria Remarque's depictions of the harrows of war and how kissable Paul is. Recovery fic featuring two loveable fools.
