“Dispatch, I’m at South Austin Dog Rescue Center,” he says into his radio as he tries to peer through the door. He can’t see anything, though, nothing other than a broken door, which he tells dispatch after he hears Grace’s soft curse from the other end. He almost tries requesting backup, just because he has no idea what he’s going into, but they already told him there are no other units available, so he just leaves his radio and focuses on the job at hand. Break-ins are never great. They can end badly, he’s aware, and he’s desperately trying to not let that happen today—everyday, but today especially—so he treads carefully and tries not to think about what’s at stake. Animals.
