Fics like In Waking

He didn’t know why he kept the chopper pad for last. He realized, dimly, as he climbed, that the hill should be above the water. It wasn’t, though. The flood remained the same depth as BJ climbed and climbed, much higher than he remembered the hill being. His legs ached. The sun was too hot. Everything was wrong, but if he could just find Hawkeye, then something would be alright. They could go home, maybe. If everyone was gone and the war was over, then they must be allowed to go home. Hawkeye could make French toast, and take his laundry down. BJ could … do something. BJ could dry out his shoes. BJ's dreams of a wounded and reproachful Hawkeye seem to predict the future. But maybe that's because, for BJ, the future has already happened. Or maybe coming home from a war just isn't all it's cracked up to be.
