BJ lay back and slung his forearm over his eyes. “You really sent that letter, didn’t you? The one to Peg,” he said. “If I recall correctly, it was your idea,” Hawkeye said. BJ laughed his breathy, disbelieving little laugh that showed up every time something ridiculous happened. “It was,” Hawkeye said. He rolled his head back on his pillow and looked up at the top of the tent. “Is it okay, y’know, that I sent the letter?” He couldn’t look at him. Suddenly it seemed pathetic that he’d written at all. “Of course it’s okay,” BJ said. “Why wouldn’t it be okay?” Hawkeye was caught, as usual, between the impulse to be honest and vulnerable and the much stronger impulse to spin his feelings into a joke. (Hawkeye and Peg become pen pals.)
