BJ was still doing extra favors for Hawkeye – refilling his coffee in the mess tent, wrapping up a post-op shift for Hawkeye – and neither of them had said anything about it. At least not yet. Hawkeye was patiently waiting for the right window, when BJ was drunk enough to be a little loose-lipped but not so drunk that he’d lash out in anger. After eighteen months of being side by side, he knew exactly when to press BJ on important questions. And so, partway through BJ’s fourth beer, Hawkeye carefully set his own drink on the table and asked, “Can we talk about Peg?”
