Stanley goes through the zending many times in a row just to hear the Narrator care about him getting hurt for once, but there's only so long he could spend with his eyes closed, pretending that any of it mattered. He ended up with a mental breakdown over it. Narrator decided to finally show himself in a physical form just so he could physically drag Stanley away from those damned stairs, as talking clearly didn't work. They talk it through afterwards. (Can be read as either romantic or platonic - might have a romantic sequel in the future)
