Fics like skipping stones

The first few times, he excuses it as rusty social skills, the same as Joel. She always gravitates to his brother, after all. When she slides in at the last minute into an empty chair beside him or presses right to his side in a crowd, leaving no room for him there as well, it’s possible that she’s just nervous about being around strangers. He takes the loss and stays where he is, content that there will be plenty of time to spend time with Joel when his kid is ready to have some space. And then the little punk pulls a chair out from under him at dinner one day when he goes to take the empty space beside his brother. Stunned to find himself on the floor, he blinks up at a round face smiling down at him innocently. “Oops,” she says, with poorly hidden satisfaction. “Sorry Tomtom, didn’t see you there.” (back in Jackson, Ellie is faced with sharing Joel's attention with Tommy) (she's not handling it well)
