Fics like life's like an hourglass (glued to the table)

He slips when he bursts out of his door and onto Paved Court, the stones slick with the rain that’s roaring down relentlessly. Water rolls down his neck and his t-shirt chafes uncomfortably where it clings to his skin, and he has to push back the hair from his eyes by the time he breaks onto the grass on the Green. There’s a flash of lightning in the distance, followed by a roll of thunder that reverberates in his bones, and yet somehow the epitome of the raw power of the Gods has nothing on the thundering of his heart in his chest. Please Lord — not her. “I’m almost there,” he pants into the receiver. “It’s gonna be okay.” Jolts of pain flash up his legs with each thundering step, the harsh impact of his footfalls kicking up water when he stumbles through a puddle entrapped in the uneven surface of the sidewalk; he’s never run so fast in his life. And yet somehow he knows it’s not fast enough.
