When Julie feels something precious and vital shatter inside her chest... that’s when she knows for sure. And when the boys finally make it home hours later — emptyhanded, shamefaced, totally defeated — Julie knows something terrible has happened. “What is it?” she demands, desperation pitching in her voice. “What did you do? What did Caleb do?” Silence. They only stare at her. “Did he hurt you?” Nothing. Blank faces, empty eyes. “Are you okay?” “We’re sorry, Julie,” is all they’ll say. “Really sorry.” ( or: The boys try to rescue Willie from Caleb. Things go very, very wrong. Now, they're the ones who need rescuing, and Julie has to scramble to save them before it's too late. )
