“So Joanne Davidson does laugh, then. You learn something new every day”, Kate teases. Jo knows that this is what Kate and Steve call banter, and that she’s not supposed to be offended by it, so she laughs back, again, and this sets Kate off as well. Both of them disintegrating into fits of giggles, their sandwiches long since forgotten, discarded on the table. “You’re very funny, actually”, Jo gets out in between giggles, and Kate feigns offence, her jaw dropped, eyes wide, as if Jo had just insulted her entire family. “What, and you’re only just working this out now?” Kate replies, just as cheeky as usual. “Obviously a little arrogant as well, I guess”, Jo replies. “Is this what banter is, then?”, she finds herself wondering to herself. Kate seems to think so, because then she’s back in fits of giggles, perfect white teeth visible, sharp jawline making her face look perfectly structured, blue eyes glistening in the light. Jo doesn’t quite recognise who she is herself, when she finds herself thinking maybe Kate Fleming isn’t so bad, after all.
