The extra mutagens caused a problem in Geralt and made him blind to the mundane things in the world. He exists mostly in darkness but can see monsters and magic in a way. The story moves through two timelines - Geralt adapting to the blindness in the past, and coping with the fact that in the present he finds himself traveling with Jaskier who has never clued in that when Geralt says he is blind that he means it quite literally.
