Sirius Black is very good at leaving. He left home at sixteen. He learned how to make a room laugh before anyone could ask what was wrong. He learned how to make himself impossible to abandon by never staying long enough to be left. Remus Lupin is very good at noticing things. He notices the way Sirius looks at the door when conversations get too personal. He notices the way he jokes when he is angry, the way he disappears when he is hurt, the way he says I’m fine like it might become true if he repeats it often enough. Neither of them is particularly good at being known. OR: Remus meets Sirius at university. They become friends. Then they become something else. Sirius’s brother comes back into his life, James Potter gets involved, and somehow everyone ends up learning that leaving and staying are both ways of loving someone.
