Fics like The Bears

“There are dancing bears in Númenor. They are true beasts, who truly dance. That is how the story goes. It is a good story, albeit unsettlingly adolescent in its humour, and it is a comforting story, and to be secure in one’s story is not a valueless thing to be. The valueless thing would be the loss of it all. Your stories, drifting through the world headlessly. Moulting from the sky and swaying down to earth, naught but food to phosphorescent underground hairballs of worms, naught but comfort to children of drowned parents, these failed feathers that had been everything to the fledgling. This is why there are dancing bears in Númenor. Even though there are no dancing bears in Númenor.” A series of tattoos favoured by Númenorean settlers and sailors across the Ages, from the War of Wrath to the King's Peace of Gondor, recount the tale of a people strangled by the stories they tell of themselves.
