Fics like The Culling of the Cormorant

Nothing in Lindon is untouched, and everything has been carried here by something else. The cormorant carries fish to its nest, an infant princess is carried out of Doriath in a vase on a housemaid’s back, the river carries mountains to the sea, the Nauglamir is carried out of the frigid forest around the infant’s neck, the sea carries continents into clouds, a spit-softened Silmaril crosses the sea in a blazing bird’s beak. This, I think, is the oldest covenant in the world. ——— In a letter to Elrond, delivered to Elwing six thousand years later, Elros Tar-Minyatur reflects on his upbringing and explains what he means when he says he “chose mortality because his mother was a bird”.
