Fics like Fait Accompli

noun: a thing that has already happened or been decided before those affected hear about it, leaving them with no option but to accept it. "It was never a choice for you, was it." Cheng Xiaoshi says, and it isn't a question, merely an observation. "Going back." "No," Lu Guang replies softly. He's quiet for long enough that Cheng Xiaoshi thinks that's all he's going to say on it. He doesn't push. "It was just…the next step in a sequence." Lu Guang continues, thoughtful and hesitant, brow furrowed just a bit. "Nothing made sense and then I had two options in front of me, to go forward or…go back. There might as well have only been one." He smiles bitterly, eyes unfocused and staring at something that Cheng Xiaoshi can't see. "You'd think after so many resets I would have it in me to at least consider the other option, but it's the same every time. I can't—I don't know how to—to live in a world without you in it. You weren't in it anymore, so I went back." And it's just that simple.
