Fics like such is the very soil that rebellion would sprout out again

Annabelle silently sits down on the wet grass. Heedless of the rain, she thumbs through the notes, expression glazed not with avarice, but with something distant and dreamy. Josie leans over her shoulder, trying to examine the bills, to study the paper that could change their lives. “Well?” Josie asks. “What do we even do with this money?” She looks down at her trembling hands. It could’ve been a one-time thing. It should have been. But they always want more, don’t they, the pair of them? They’re always too hungry. Hungry for something she doesn’t care to dwell on. “I’d have thought it was obvious.” Annabelle gazes off into the horizon. Who knows what visions of fire and brimstone were flashing before her eyes? Never Give Annabelle a Gun, rewritten as a southern gothic.
