”I expect you to treat this bloody borrow-and-beg like your own child, Potter,” he hissed as they made their way back to the castle. Harry—who was cradling the egg, a tiny light-brown thing with a spattering of dark speckles, carefully in his mittened hands—almost dropped it at the slip of Cockney that he hadn’t heard from Riddle since first year. “If it gets turned into an omelet by a Bludger while you’re playing your imbecilic sport, they will never find your body.” ”I’d worry less about me breaking it and more about you keeping it warm,” Harry retorted, holding the egg protectively away from Riddle’s glare—vibes that rancid couldn’t be good for a developing creature. “You couldn’t melt butter in those icy hands of yours, let alone support life.” … When Harry came to retrieve the egg that evening, there was a toad tied to the top of it. “RIDDLE!” Harry and Tom get paired up for the ol’ “take care of an egg together” project for Care of Magical Creatures. Tom tries to put his own Slytherin spin on the assignment, and soon they’re both more invested than they’d anticipated. Written for the Purge XL prompt “Daddy”.
