Sam starts listing off every fantasy he's had the past four years, how he kept the anxiety at bay. Dean making a life for himself, god, that's all he could hope for. Once Sam made something--of himself, then he could come back, collect. Dean didn’t want to go with him then, didn't want to leave Dad out of some misplaced guilt, not wanting him alone, but surely, once Dean saw how Sam could--take care of them, even Dad if he had to, he'd change his tune. The opportunity never came.
