Dortmund had been late-night conversations, shared training grounds, stupid jokes, and the kind of friendship neither of them had thought they would ever have to work to keep. Then Erling left for Manchester. Jude went to Madrid. Calls became messages, messages became birthday wishes, and somewhere along the way, they became two people who still knew everything about each other and almost nothing at all. By the summer of 2026, they are no longer teammates. They are opponents. When England and Norway meet at the World Cup, the story is supposed to be about football: two of the best players in the world, former teammates facing each other on the biggest stage, and ninety minutes that could end one country's dream. Instead, something goes wrong. Professional-grade suppressants are not supposed to fail. Scents are not supposed to carry across a football pitch. And Jude is definitely not supposed to know, with terrifying certainty, exactly where Erling is without having to look. After years of distance, one match forces them back into each other's orbit—and leaves them with a question neither of them is ready to answer. Because sometimes the mind moves on. The body remembers.
