He wasn't wearing a shirt. Shinji noticed this the way you notice something you'd been carefully not noticing. A bead of sweat traced a slow path from the hollow of Akihiko's throat, down the center of his chest, following the line of his sternum. Shinji watched it travel the planes of his abdomen and felt something shift low in his stomach. He told himself it was jealousy. Akihiko, burning bright and getting stronger. Shinji, rationing pills in a bathroom mirror at two in the morning. That made sense. That was something he could file away and forget about. But jealousy had never made him forget to breathe before. And it had never made him stand in a dark hallway, unable to make himself leave. Shinji has spent years being careful. Careful with his distance, his silence, the thousand small ways he's kept himself from wanting what he can't have. He's good at it. He's had to be.Then Akihiko shows up at his door in the middle of the night, and Shinji is running out of reasons to keep being careful — and running out of time.
