Fics like my sweet little blue-eyed girl

The countryside raced by in a blur of desert and pasture. Animals crowded by the side of the road. Isaiah hit one, once, a doe that couldn’t be more than half-grown. He stopped to examine the damage of the truck, cursing God and his mother and the world. Ethel stayed in her seat. She could hear the dying thing crying out, but there was nothing she could do. When Isaiah climbed back in there was blood on his hands. “Should we bury it?” Ethel asked. She was suddenly very small. The pistol wasn’t in her pocket anymore. It was somewhere in the backseat, tucked between her bag and his clothes. Isaiah looked at her. “What for?” Ethel shrugged. She didn’t answer. “I’d say we eat it if we knew where it’d been,” Isaiah continued, “but it’s mangled. The meat wouldn’t be any good.” She wouldn’t eat it even if it was a gift from God. Its whimpering had died out and there was nothing but silence on the open road. Death took from them without saying a word. Isaiah was quiet. They drove for the rest of the night and when the sun broke above the horizon line it was a kind of funeral. - or: a vaguely canon-compliant retelling of ethel and isaiah's journey west.
