Before she can soothe him, Buck keeps talking. “Mom and dad hate me, pretty permanently this time-” “I’m sure-” “And Eddie’s dad made it clear that I’m not welcome in his son’s or his grandson’s life. So.” Buck gives the most painful smile Maddie’s ever seen. Tears suddenly stream down his face. “Everyone’s leaving me.” Or: Buck shows up at Maddie's doorstep with a fever and quite a few recent emotional scars. This makes Maddie put on her Big-Sister pants and say a few truths and burn a few bridges. She also brings home exactly what Buck needs to feel better, though technically, it was Eddie's idea.
