Fics like Feathers of a Different Color

“You may sneer at my role as a governess, but it shows nothing more than a man’s lack of imagination. No, indeed, I have loftier ambitions. I’m here today to speak to the royal family about bringing my considerable skills to their new Grisha. I was wasted on dirty whores and self-important merchers,” Heleen responds. “Mmmm.” That sound in Brekker’s raspy voice is cold enough to freeze ice. She expects him to respond angrily to her information, but he remains unnaturally unruffled with that unreadable, birdlike expression on his face. After several beats too long to be comfortable, he continues, “This must have been a relatively recent development if they haven’t figured you out yet. Oh well. It won’t be long. You’re not as subtle as you think you are.” And Heleen knows a threat when she hears one. *** Heleen Van Houden has reinvented herself in Ravka, a phoenix burning away the peacock feathers of her old life. On the cusp of her crowning achievement, a royal appointment, she encounters the only two people who could douse her flames and bring her crashing to the ground. But why would the queen believe them over an upstanding citizen, such as herself? Impossible.
