Fics like A Breath of Consciousness

Set before the events of the TV series. During a routine solo mission in Brooklyn, Alec Lightwood intervenes in what appears to be an unauthorized warlock ritual. When the magic collapses, the warlock’s body dies—but his consciousness does not. Bound to Alec in the aftermath of a failed spell, the presence becomes a silent companion inside his mind: observant, restrained, and unexpectedly compassionate. As Alec continues his duties as a Shadowhunter, the voice challenges the harsh standards he imposes on himself, forcing him to confront guilt, exhaustion, and a lifetime of self-denial. This subtle internal shift reshapes Alec long before he meets Magnus Bane—softening his edges, loosening his rigid control, and changing the way he sees both himself and others. When the events of the series finally begin, Alec is no longer quite the same man the world expects him to be. A story about self-awareness, quiet transformation, and how being truly seen—sometimes from within—can change everything.
