The shaking and squealing metal didn’t scare him…not really. It wasn’t the sound of the elevator groaning like a dying machine or the violent lurch that sent his stomach into his throat and his hands snapping out for support. It wasn’t even the way his chest heaved, lungs refusing to cooperate or how the edges of his vision began tunnelling as a sharp ringing filled his ears. No. What terrified him was the fact that he wasn’t alone in this death trap. Both his bosses were in here. Two of the three people who kept the ER from falling apart, the ones who made sure patients didn’t riot and nurses didn’t quit mid-shift. And now they were going to die- all because they followed stupid little him into this cursed elevator. He couldn’t pinpoint when his head hit the metal railing, only that there was a flash of white, a crack and then something warm and slick trailing down his temple. He couldn’t remember when the world went black, like someone had pressed a blindfold over his eyes. He did remember the voices, though.
