Fics like The Albatross

You show up in Jackson with nothing, just a name on your lips and the faint crust of blood drying on your skin. Months after the horde rips its way through the heart of the town, and with no memory of how you got there, you struggle to assimilate. You try—and you fail miserably. So Maria tucks you away on the expansion project with the other no-talent nobodies. Those who can’t shoot straight, who won’t follow orders, but are still alive enough to swing a hammer. With no other choice, you take the opportunity. At your wit’s end, no family, barely any friends, you're assigned to work under a man the town respects. Joel Miller carries more than the tools and the orders—he carries weight. Authority. Fear. Trust. And maybe, if you prove yourself, he could be your ticket to something like purpose again. But Joel doesn’t like you. Doesn’t trust you. There are unanswered questions in his eyes—like he’s waiting for something to bleed out. Maybe he’s right. Because sooner or later, the past always finds a way back.
