Fics like if none of us was real
Elim Garak was very used to being the exact opposite of what was demanded of him. He could not help it. After a while, everything and everyone Elim Garak became was true, especially when it was all a lie, and he learned to live with that state of not-being, of never wanting. But in exile, everything had changed, and when his father presumably died, and then definitely died, and Elim had finally freed himself of his own deceptions- Perhaps there was someone else who could learn to want right alongside him.
