Fics like When Heinrich is Six

Henry returns to Rattay after many months away, and Heinrich sees the side of his father that loves. “Henry!” Three heads rise to the balcony, where Heinrich’s father is leaning over the balusters looking down. The chill wind pulls at the loose ends of his hair and the gaping collar of his tunic, though he shows no reaction to the cold. He’s almost never up this early — grousing if he’s woken before noon — but his eyes are wide awake now, fixed on Henry alone. Heinrich senses himself shrinking back into the shape of a child, small and wet and instantly forgotten. He bristles with disappointment. Henry is beyond him now. And the courtyard, the village, the knights, the rain, his mother. All are secondary to Lord Hans Capon, who only has to call his name.
