Fics like slipping through my fingers

every time he hears bucky’s name - or the name of someone who knew him, or the sound of his own voice saying “sergeant barnes” in passing - it feels like a needle slipping between his ribs. the others don’t understand, not really. they talk about bucky like a piece of history, a hero in the stories they’ve read, but to steve, he’s not a story. he’s the boy who bandaged his bloody knuckles and made him laugh until his lungs burned. he’s bucky. he’s gone.
