When Eddie's sisters were young, their favorite game was what they called "Karaoke Dance Party." Eddie didn't mind it, because there wasn't much setup involved — just a CD in the player and swallowed pride. Adriana and Sophia were shameless, using anything they could find as a microphone or a guitar or a saxophone. It would only end when their mother complained about the noise. On rare occasions, she'd join them. Eddie had loved seeing her like that: loose, agreeable, a breezy smile on her normally stern face. Eddie can’t remember what it felt like to dance that freely. It’s hard to imagine that he could. Maybe that’s how his mother felt too, all those times she came downstairs and didn’t join them. And every time she did, she proved herself wrong.
