Fics like the chief, the captain, and the probie

He’s essentially programmed to recognize and respond to the sound of an alarm or bell, so when the screech of his home fire alarm penetrates through his sleep on a morning after a 24-hour shift, Tommy’s hands instantly start reaching for his uniform boots the second his head is off the pillow. When they instead find slippers in the space next to his bed, Tommy blinks as his brain reboots. He’s not at harbour. He’s not in the barracks. It’s not the bell alerting the crew to an emergency. It’s the smoke alarm in the kitchen.
