Fics like connecting the dots

Javert has his eye on a young suspect. Unable to get approval for an undercover operation, he goes it alone—but finds some unexpected backup. ----- “How did you hear about the event?” asked the blond one. "I heard about it from a friend,” said Javert smoothly. “He couldn’t make it tonight.” “Ah, too bad,” said the curly-haired one. “What about you, Monsieur?” “I’m with him,” said Ultime, only a fraction too slowly. He shot Javert a tight little smile, tilting his head slightly as if to say, Isn’t that right, new friend?
