Fics like late arrival to the funeral

Curt doesn’t usually consider himself a conflict-avoidant person, but, looking at his fake funeral, he realises he might need to reevaluate. In his defence, it wasn’t actually his idea. It was someone else’s idea that he had complained about, loudly and repeatedly, until Cynthia pointed out that whilst he was on leave he was technically a civilian and therefore couldn’t run assignments. He’d tried to protest, but the idea of taking on a mission – alone or with a shiny new partner – made bile rise in his throat, burning the back of his mouth until he tasted nothing but ashes. - It's 1960, and Curt has to fake his death for his own safety. The funeral comes with a few surprises.
