Fics like Only Bronze

”Knees of the Gods” alternative ending. One such afternoon when the wind howled outside and rain battered the windows, Mrs Foster brought the tea tray and the newspaper and set them on the little table I’d just pulled back into place after moving it to make room for me to light the fire. I took the newspaper, shaking out the pages until I found the only one that mattered to her, and she poured the tea. I quickly scanned the lists of names in case I would have to prepare to read bad news, and cried out in shock. Her cup rattled onto its saucer. “Is it my Joe? Tell me!” “No,” I said, my hands gripping the newspaper so tightly it crumpled. “It’s a friend, a dear friend I thought dead.” I pointed to the name printed under the heading of Honours. “You must read that name back to me. I fear that wishful thinking has put it there.” But the name she read to me was indeed the pseudonym of my dear Raffles.
